A note about comments. I love them, because I love hearing from you. Also, I just switched over my commenting to a new system. Older post comments might not be in the correct order, which means my replies are all jacked up. But I like the new system so whatever.

Postcards from the Road

March 12

Hey!
So we’re on the road now and making good time. We stopped in Louisville for the night and took pictures in front of this giant baseball bat. You would have loved it! It was ridiculously oversized. We’ll show you pictures when we get back. Hope you’re studying hard, and we’ll see you soon.

OMG, we made it to New Orleans! We so wish you were here! It’s so beautiful down here. There’s music everywhere, and the people here are so friendly. The food is amazing. We can’t stop eating everything we come across. We’d bring some back, but there’s no way it’ll make it there. We'd tell you to put the books down and fly out here, but break will be over by the time you get this card. Next year we’re kidnapping you for an adventure!

Guess what? We made it to the Gulf! The water is so blue, and the sand squishes between our toes. We could live on this beach forever! If we don’t come back you can find us right here. Miss you bunches!

We’re on our way back. Turns out the beach is kind of boring. There’s not as much to do here as you would think. Also? We miss you too much to leave you back at school! We’ll probably see you before you get your cards, but that’s ok. We love you!

xoxo

PS. We broke the passenger side window and it won’t roll up anymore. So we taped plastic over it and we’ll get it fixed when we get back. It makes a really loud flapping noise when we’re on the highway, so we’re really sorry about that. Next time we’ll rent a car instead of borrowing yours. Forgive us?

This is a Red Writing Hood prompt from Write on Edge

Writing often involves a metaphorical journey as our characters move through the story and discover something about themselves. This week, we’d like you to take us on an actual journey, specifically a road trip? Think about who is in the car. Where are they going and why? What’s on the radio or what are the travelers talking about? In 300 words or less, create a fiction or creative non-fiction piece that lets us feel the wind from an open window or the dry heat of a car vent.

  1. I've been on these trips many times. Excited when you leave, hating yourself for getting out of bed three days later.

  7. Thanks everyone for the lovely comments! This was a fun prompt. It was inspired by a spring break in college when a couple of friends sent me tons of postcards while they were on the road.

  8. I like the end. Did they really borrow your car?

  9. Alyssa, I'll admit that the car bit was from another story in my life. It was actually from me borrowing a car from someone else, and I totally broke the window (in the middle of winter no less). I thought it would be a nice funny ending so I mixed it in.

  10. Funny! We borrowed a friend's roommate's car for an impromptu road trip one time. Only later did we learn that the roommate wasn't, um, informed of the borrowing until we returned.

I feel for the studier :)
